E-Invoice

An e-invoice is an invoice which is sent and received electronically. This can be done via email, the Internet, a CD or any other electronic medium. In other words, an e-invoice is an invoice which isn't paper based.

E-invoices can be divided into two categories:

1. Standardized textfiles based on standards such as XML or EDIFACT. This type of e-invoice is easily interpreted by a computer but it is harder for us humans to understand. There are also different standards depending on country, line of business etc.

2. Digitized images of invoices based on formats such as PDF. The greatest benefit with this type of e-invoice is simplicity. The sender sends an image of the invoice as an email attachment. The receiver can process the e-invoice using the same procedure as with regular, paper invoices.
