Kodak scanners – Compression vs. quality of JPEG images created by FORMS and INVOICES

This information is of interest if you use the the Scan module to export JPEG images.

In the Scanner settings dialog there is a sliding Quality bar that you can use to adjust the image quality of grayscale and color images. Using this bar you select a value from 1 to 100. With most color scanners (not Kodak), this value translates directly to a value in the scanner, where 1 means the highest degree of compression and 100 means the best image quality.

Unfortunately, some Kodak scanners do have a corresponding 1-100 scale. Therefore, the value specified by the Quality is translated to Kodak's own values as described below, depending on which scanner you are using and which FORMS or INVOICES version you are running.

Note: Due to scanty information from Kodak, ReadSoft unfortunately cannot guarantee the accuracy of this data. If you need exact details, please contact your ReadSoft representative, providing the relevant information about your specific installation.

FORMS 5-2 Service Pack 7 and earlier
INVOICES 5-2 Service Pack 7 and earlier
INVOICES 5-3 Service Pack 1 and earlier

Kodak 4500 and 3590C and all certified scanners in the i800 series

The only valid values for these two scanner models are:

  • 0 - 33: Lowest compression, largest image size, "best" quality

  • 34 - 66: Medium compression, medium image size

Only two steps are available. Example: 5 has the same result as 33, and 34 has the same result as 60.

Warning: Selecting a value higher than 66 will not result in any images.

FORMS 5-2 Service Pack 8 and later
INVOICES 5-2 Service Pack 8 and later
INVOICES 5-3 Service Pack 2 and later
INVOICES 5-4 (all versions)

All certified scanners in the i200 and i800 series with firmware version 2.xx, and all certified scanners in the i100, i600, i1200, and i1800 series

  • 1 - 16 = "Draft" quality (-2, highest degree of compression, smallest file size, lowest image quality)

  • 17- 32 = "Good" quality (-1)

  • 33-51 = "Better" quality (0)

  • 52-67 = "Best" quality (1)

  • 68-83 = "Custom" quality (2, do not use this!

  • 84-100 = "Superior" quality (3, even better than "best", best possible image quality, smallest degree of compression, largest file size)

All certified scanners in the i200 and i800 series with firmware version 1.xx, as well as Kodak 4500 and 3590C

  • 1 - 24 = "Good" quality (-1, highest degree of compression, smallest file size, lowest image quality)

  • 25 - 49 = "Better" quality (0)

  • 50 - 74 = "Best" quality (1)

  • 75 - 100 = "Custom" quality (2, do not use this!

Warning: If a Kodak engineer visits the site, it is Kodak's policy to upgrade from firmware version 1.xx to 2.xx unless the customer states a reason not to upgrade. Depending on your Quality settings in FORMS or INVOICES, this could affect the resulting images.
